Tomato chutney

Tomato chutney is a sauce used as accompaniment in Indian cuisine for breakfast dishes made from Tomatoes, onions, flavorings and aromats.

Different methods of making tomato chutney

Basically there are two types of methods people make tomato chutney. Both method has unique taste and texture.

First method is Sautéing method which is basically seen widely in homestyle cooking in South Indian cuisine where tomatoes, onions, spices and flavorings are cooking and sautéed till fluffy and soft.

Second method is through widely common in North Indian cuisine and also popular Southern Indian regions where the tomatoes, onions are cooked and then grinded into fine puree and then finished with tadka tempering.

Tips and tricks

  1. In a pan, add oil, mustard seeds, dried red chilies, curry leaves and let it crack. 

    Add crushed garlic, ginger and let it turn golden brown and add the chopped onions and sauté till golden brown for about 3 minutes.

    Add chopped tomatoes and cook till mushy and fluffy by adding little water for about 5 minutes.

    Add salt, turmeric powder, Kashmiri red chili powder, and add more water and cook for more 3 - 5 minutes.

    Serve hot with Idli, dosa, poori etc.

For grinding method

  1. In a pan add, oil, onions , ginger and garlic and cook for 5 minutes in medium flame or till golden brown.

    Add tomatoes , red chili powder, salt and cook till mushy and fluffy.

    Cook down and grind in it in mixer.

    In a pan , add oil, mustard seeds, chana dal, dried red chilies, curry leaves and let it crack and pour it over the chutney and give it a quick mix and serve hot.
